Curatorship Education

Playground is a participatory project, devised by the Festival Architettura in Città 2017, curated by ARTECO and IED Torino, leading to the transformation of an unused playing field to be found in the outdoor spaces of the Drovetti Middle School into a multifunctional area open to the general public.

Inspired by one of the main aims of the promoting body – the Festival Architettura in Città 2017 – i.e. bringing adolescents closer to themes of an architectural nature, the project was developed in various stages: a theoretical contribution of ARTECO, aimed at presenting the potential of the theme in question and good practices selected from the international architectural panorama (playground as an arena of experimentation with body-space relations, a physical territory capable of hosting the production of new mental scenarios); a participatory workshop curated by ARTECO which called on the students of the Drovetti Middle School and of the Cottini Artistic Lyceum to interact and collaborate on the analysis of the present architectural context and the expression of the desire for transformation; a visual planning workshop held by Truly Design, involving students from the IED Torino together with the young participants from the middle school and the lyceum, coming to an end with the selection of the project which most closely reflected the aims, with a view to the physical implementation of the project on the school grounds.

Viewing contemporary art as a means for the reappropriation of spaces and the elaboration of alternative ways for them to be used, for the opening day of Playground, ARTECO proposed an artistic intervention which materialised in the performance Cubo Race devised by Franco Ariaudo, Luca Pucci and Emanuele De Donno. The playful-performative intervention of a participatory nature, inspired by one of the classic games from the archive of Giochi Senza Frontiere (‘It’s a Knockout’), witnessed the involvement of the students of the Drovetti School in a balancing game, meant as a metaphor for the effort needed to preserve European unity: a powerful symbol of the struggle against instability.

The project came to an end on 27 May 2017, at the citadel of the Festival Spazio Q35, with the presentation of the book Sportification, Eurovisions, Performativity and Playgrounds (Franco Ariaudo, Luca Pucci and Emanuele De Donno, Viaindustriae 2017) which made it possible to contextualise the performance Cubo Race within broader research into the theme of tongue-in-cheek and ephemeral architecture, and to open up new scenarios of urban transformation.
